US Passport Office Notifies County Clerk Kendall of Delays in Processing Passport Applications

Dutchess County Clerk, Bradford Kendall announced today that he has been notified by the United States Passport Office, that the passport office is delayed in processing Untied States passport applications.  These delays are being attributed to the new air travel guidelines recently established by the US Department of Homeland Security, which requires individuals to possess a passport for entry into the United States from Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Clerk Kendall stated, “The new federal guidelines have caused the passport offices in Washington, DC to be inundated with applications.  The wait time to process a passport application has risen to ten weeks as apposed to the normal six week waiting period.  In addition, it is taking up to four weeks to process expedited applications.”

Clerk Kendall stressed how important it is to apply for a passport far in advance of any travel plans.  County residents can apply for a passport at the county clerk’s office, located at 22 Market Street, Poughkeepsie.  A certified birth certificate with a raised seal and a photo ID is required to begin the processing of a passport.  Also required to be attached to the application are two identical photographs, which can be taken at the clerks’ office for a $10 fee.  Application fees do apply and expedited applications have an additional fee.
