Dutchess County Probation Officer Receives Award for Outstanding Service

Poughkeepsie... County Executive William R. Steinhaus congratulates Dutchess County Probation Officer Norm Roush who is receiving the State Directors’ Award for Outstanding Service by a Probation Officer on August 3rd at the New York State Probation Officers Association Conference in Albany. This award is given in recognition of exceptional service, dedication and professionalism performed by a probation officer who has significantly contributed to the field of community corrections and strengthened its role within the criminal justice and/or juvenile justice system.

According to Executive Steinhaus, “Officer Roush’s concern about the number of youth being attracted to gang activity led him to take a proactive approach by facilitating and coordinating a taskforce of representatives from local police agencies and the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office. He became the first probation officer in the Northeast to be certified as an instructor of G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training), a nationally acclaimed evidenced–based prevention program.”

Probation Officer Roush has successfully worked with numerous gang involved youth by earning a level of trust with them. According to Dutchess County Office of Probation and Community Corrections Director Mary Ellen Still, “Officer Roush’s consistent performance, enthusiasm, and dedication to his work with gang involved youth make him especially deserving of this award.  He willingly shares his expertise with his fellow probation officers to help achieve better outcomes for the youth.”

His efforts in working with the local school district, led Dutchess County Family Court Judge Peter Forman to ask that Probation Officer Roush be appointed as the Probation representative on the Family Court Drug Treatment Team.   He is considered as a resource for local schools, Family Court, County Attorney’s Office and various treatment agencies. Mr. Roush is also involved in the new county initiative concerning electronic monitoring for juveniles.

In a recent state newsletter, New York State Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives Director Robert Maccarone states, “Officer Roush’s collaborative efforts for education and prevention are perfect examples of an effective, efficient, proactive criminal justice approach to community safety and recidivism reduction.”

“I appreciate being a representative of Dutchess County Probation and Community Corrections, and I enjoy my job,” states Officer Roush.

County Executive Steinhaus concluded, “Probation Officer Roush shows great humility in the work he does. We are very proud of his accomplishments and feel fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable professional.”
