County Flu Clinics Scheduled

Poughkeepsie . . . Dutchess County Executive, William R. Steinhaus announced today the schedule for the County’s 2006 Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinics. Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinics are conducted throughout the county each year during the fall by the Dutchess County Department of Health. This year these clinics will be held from November 6th to December 27, 2006.

County Executive Steinhaus said, “The health and well being for Dutchess County residents continues to be a high priority for county government.  For this reason, each fall we are committed to make available flu and pneumonia vaccinations to those in the highest risk categories.”

Commissioner of Health Dr. Michael C. Caldwell said, “In order to better serve our senior population, we have expanded our clinic hours.  Additionally, although we reduced the number of sites, we selected venues that are geographically balanced and that will both accommodate large crowds in a safe and efficient manner, plus many are accessible by public transportation.” Dr Caldwell went on to say, “In preparation for the County’s emergency preparedness drills, larger sites that can handle larger volumes were chosen to make sure there is adequate parking and that we are prepared to handle medically fragile individuals.”

By the end of 2005, a total of 6,871 individuals had received their flu vaccine, with 4,790 of them age 65 and older.  County Executive Steinhaus added, “To further our commitment of making sure the most vulnerable populations get vaccinated, additional supplies of flu vaccine received from the New York State Department of Health were offered to private providers who experienced a shortage earlier in the season, to enable them to provide the vaccine to their high risk patients”.

The County Executive said representatives from various county departments will be available at the clinics to distribute information about programs and services in Dutchess County that are important to seniors. These include such programs as: the HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps underwrite the cost of heating fuel oil for seniors) and Home Weatherization program through the County’s Division of Aging Services; and services available through the Social Services Department’s Adult Protective Services Unit.

Information about flu immunization and the public flu clinic schedule may be obtained by calling the Department of Health's Flu Immunization Hot-Line at (845) 486-3435. The hot-line is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, or log onto the County’s website at
