Steinhaus Extends “Planning” Support to Dover

Poughkeepsie... County Executive William R. Steinhaus has extended an agreement to provide a Planning Coordinator to the Town of Dover. Planning support from the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development has been made available for the past 2 years for technical assistance and planning services to the Town.

Jill Way, Town of Dover Supervisor, saw the need for this support in 2004, when increased development pressure in the Town called for outside expertise in planning. Steinhaus said, “This relationship we’ve put in place with Dover Supervisor Jill Way benefits the county as well as the town.  This arrangement has provided crucial support to the Town.  Dover has approximately fifty-one applications before the Planning Board at this time; and the Town Board is in the process of reviewing the County’s largest development application in recent County history, the redevelopment of the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center.”  He continued, “Also, our planning staff gets the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and skills in areas generally not done on the county level.”
The actual work has involved review and redesigns of subdivisions, review of site plans, technical assistance, and consultations with applicants and board members. Currently, work includes a redesign for a Traditional Neighborhood Development in a hamlet center and a rewrite of the Planning Board application process, which includes a checklist for applicants.

Supervisor Jill Way stated, “Like other Dutchess County towns, Dover has been experiencing rapid growth. We appreciate the cooperation of County Executive Steinhaus in providing this valuable asset to the Town.  Not only do we benefit from the Planner’s knowledge, but the expertise and resources of the entire staff at the Department of Planning and Development.”

The County Executive added, “We look forward to continuing this partnership with the Town of Dover.”
