Poughkeepsie... “Dutchess County residents saved over $216,754 in 2006 on prescription drug purchases thanks to our Prescription Drug Discount Card program,” said Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus.
The Dutchess County Prescription Drug Discount Card is available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo). The program offers an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. All county residents, regardless of age or income, can take advantage of the discount card, which is accepted at more than 55 pharmacies participating countywide. A national network of more than 57,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the NACo prescription discount drug card.
According to a NACo status report, more than 6,500 residents took advantage of the discount card program when they filled 14,334 prescriptions in 2006. County Executive Steinhaus said, “I continue to be impressed by how much Dutchess County residents can save on prescription drugs through this program. Last year, residents saved an average of $14.50 per prescription, which represents nearly a 25% savings off the original price.” Steinhaus continued, “NACo designed this program to be simple and convenient. Residents may use the card at any of the participating pharmacies any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use.”
According to Gary Cooper, Chairman of the Dutchess County Legislature, "Dutchess County residents with limited health care coverage and those without health insurance are able to realize significant savings on their prescription drug expenses when they take advantage of this program. The Legislature and County Executive Steinhaus made a wise decision when joining the NACo plan."
Dutchess County Prescription Discount Cards may be obtained at the County’s Health Department, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Mental Hygiene, the Division of Aging Services. The cards are also available at area non-profits, such as Dutchess County Community Action Agency, with locations in Beacon, Dover and Poughkeepsie, and at many local pharmacies.
