Seniors Often at Risk in Extreme Heat

Poughkeepsie…  With the current forecast of high heat and humidity, Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus is urging all residents to be especially mindful of their elderly friends and neighbors.  Senior citizens and those with chronic health problems have the greatest heat-related health risk.

County Executive Steinhaus asked all residents to look out for their elderly family, friends and neighbors. “Take a moment to call or check in on an elderly friend or relative during this heat-wave.  A moment of caring can help prevent a serious health situation.”

All elderly residents should take special precautions including:

  • drink plenty of water and non-alcoholic beverages
  • stay in well ventilated or air conditioned areas
  • close blinds or curtains to keep direct sunlight out
  • stay in the shade and wear a hat when outdoors
  • wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing
  • take cool showers or baths

For a free brochure on heat-related illness and the elderly, call the Dutchess County Division of Aging Services at (845) 486-2555, toll free at (866) 486-2555 or email them at  Information can also be found under Division of Aging Services at
