Dutchess County Parks... the perfect place to celebrate Mother's Day

Poughkeepsie…Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11th.   Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has a suggestion for a gift Mom is sure to love…. some quality time with family at one of Dutchess County’s beautiful County parks!    According to a Jenny Craig poll, the top two things moms want to do on Mother’s Day is to go walking with their families and to go to the park.

“Dutchess County parks are the perfect destination to spend a fun-filled Mother’s Day and enjoy quality time with Mom and the whole family,” said County Executive Steinhaus, “and no reservations are required!”

Whether Mom is looking for some peace and relaxation or a day packed with activity, spending time together at one of Dutchess County’s beautiful parks is a great way to show Mom how much you love her.

Bowdoin Park is Dutchess County’s majestic 301 acre park located in the southern part of the Town of Poughkeepsie on Sheafe Road.  Voted “Best Park in the Hudson Valley 2007” by the readers of Hudson Valley magazine,  Bowdoin offers spectacular views of the Hudson River and features great amenities for a day of family fun including two softball fields, three soccer fields, over 3 miles of nature trail as well as open areas for picnicking and playgrounds for children.

Wilcox Park is a spectacular 600 acre site in the Town of Milan where Mom and the whole family is sure to spend a great day together.    The park features two lakes that are perfect for fishing, 3 playground areas and over 5 miles of hiking trails.   Take a nature walk and enjoy the scenic overlook of Stissing Mountain and the Catskills.  Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the beautiful Blue Heron, one of the many interesting birds who make Wilcox Park their home!

Mom is sure to enjoy a peaceful day of relaxation and serenity at Quiet Cove Riverfront Park, the County’s 27 acre site located in the Town of Poughkeepsie, just north of Marist College.  Enjoy a picnic lunch on the Hudson River waterfront or cast a line to try your luck at fishing.   There are numerous improvements planned for Quiet Cove including an improved boat ramp, building restoration and major landscape enhancements.

Remember how long Mom spent teaching you how to ride your bike?  Show off your bicycling skills and take her for a ride on either of the County’s rail trails!      If Mom prefers being on two feet instead of two wheels, challenge her to a brisk, invigorating run or enjoy a leisurely stroll.

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail currently offers over 10 miles of paved bike trails that weave through farms, wetlands, forest hillsides, historic settlements and village centers.     Plans are underway to expand the HVRT approximately 8 miles from Millerton to Ancram in Columbia County.

The eagerly anticipated Dutchess Rail Trail is the County’s 12 mile trail that will run from Poughkeepsie, through LaGrange and Wappinger to East Fishkill.  The first section of the trail is now paved and open in East Fishkill between NYS Route 376 and Lake Walton Road.   Mom will feel like she stepped away from all of the hustle and bustle of her everyday routine when you follow the Dutchess Rail Trail and discover the hidden treasure of Lake Walton.     Look for the next portion of the Dutchess Rail Trail to be constructed, which will be a 2.4 mile section between Overocker Road and Morgan Lake in the Town of Poughkeepsie.

“So pack a picnic feast for Mom and give her the gift of health and wellness with a fun-filled day spent with family and friends at the park,” said County Executive Steinhaus.   “For all of you celebrating on Sunday, best wishes for a Happy and healthy Mother’s Day!”
