Veterans Appreciation Day Event to feature information on Suicide Prevention

Poughkeepsie… The 3rd Annual Dutchess County Veterans Appreciation Day will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the Roosevelt Library and Home in Hyde Park.  The event will take place from 12pm until 3pm.   The Veterans Appreciation Day celebrates all those who have honorably served their country from the Dutchess County area and provides residents an opportunity to say THANK YOU to our local veterans for their service and sacrifice.

In addition, Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced this year’s event will feature an important presentation about the Veterans Affairs’ Suicide Prevention Initiative at 1pm.

“The veterans who have shown such strength and dedication in defense of our country are often vulnerable to the psychological effects of exposure to combat which may include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with accompanying suicidal thoughts,” said Dr. Kenneth Glatt, Dutchess County’s Commissioner of Mental Hygiene.   “This event is an important opportunity for all of us to learn how we can help our veterans and ensure they get the help they may need.”

Studies have shown veterans are at high risk for suicide because of many factors unique to their service in their country’s uniformed services during time of conflict or war. Added to those experiences are the complications resulting from physical injuries and the debilitating effects associated with chronic diseases in aging.

Joseph J. Amato, PhD,  Suicide Prevention Coordinator from the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System, will host the suicide prevention seminar and will talk about  Operation S.A.V.E., a program  designed to help understand the signs of suicide and teach people how to act with care and compassion if they encounter a veteran who is suicidal. The acronym “SAVE” summarizes the steps needed to take an active and valuable role in suicide prevention.

  • Signs of suicidal thinking
  • Ask questions
  • Validate the veteran’s experience
  • Encourage treatment and Expedite getting help

The Dutchess County Veterans Appreciation Day is open to all veterans and their families as well as the general public.  For further information, please contact the Dutchess County Veterans Service Agency at 845-486-2060 or visit www.dutchessny.gov.
