Dutchess County to Host Public Forum to Discuss Developmental Disability Services

Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced a public forum will be held on service needs for persons with developmental disabilities and their families. The forum will take place on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 from 4-6 P.M. in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Mental Health Center, 230 North Road in Poughkeepsie.  The event is open to all Dutchess County residents and is being sponsored by the Developmental Disabilities Subcommittee of the Dutchess County Mental Hygiene Board.

County Executive Steinhaus said, “We invite consumers, family members, service providers and all interested residents to share their concerns, suggestions and experiences to help us to determine what additional and/or expanded supports may be necessary to help people with developmental disabilities live successfully in our community.”

According to the Commissioner of Mental Hygiene, Dr. Kenneth M. Glatt, “The input from those who attend the forum will assist the Department in the formulation of its Local Governmental Plan for the year 2010.  We are talking about improving opportunities for people who have been diagnosed as having a developmental disability occurring before the age of 22, i.e., mental retardation, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and autism.”

Karen Trokan, LCSW, Division Chief for Developmental Disabilities Services, will moderate the meeting. The Mental Hygiene Board’s Developmental Disabilities Subcommittee is a planning and advisory group of volunteer citizens.  Ms. Trokan serves as Staff Liaison to the Subcommittee, whose nine members are appointed by the Mental Hygiene Board.  For further information, please contact Ms. Trokan at the Department’s Mansion Street Center.  The telephone number is 486-3700.
