Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced the Dutchess County Department of Health will once again partner with several local community organizations to conduct the 4th Annual Great Halloween Candy Exchange Program on Sunday, November 1st from noon to 4pm at various locations throughout the county. Children can donate a pound of Halloween trick-or-treat candy to be shipped to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as those at local veteran’s hospitals. In exchange for their candy, children will receive a new book or fun passes for local recreational businesses.
“The Great Halloween Candy Exchange Program lets Trick or Treaters use their Halloween candy to help others and promote good health,” said County Executive Steinhaus. “It is a great way for families to reinforce the values of sharing, literacy, and the importance of physical activity to prevent childhood obesity.”
For every pound of candy donated at one of the designated drop-off sites, children will receive a free, age-appropriate new book or a fun pass to Fun Central for mini-golf, Hyde Park Roller Magic, McCann Ice Arena, or All Sport Fishkill. The goal of the program is to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity as well as help children develop a love for reading and physical activity.
The Great Halloween Candy Exchange Program is a partnership of All Sport Fishkill, Astor Services for Children and Families, Children's Medical Group, Dutchess County Department of Health, Literacy Connections of Dutchess County, and Newburgh Family YMCA.
The Shipping Place in Hyde Park is generously packaging and shipping the candy. Other sponsors include All Access Dental, Splashdown Beach and all of the facilities that donated fun activity passes.
Candy can be dropped off from noon to 4 pm on Sunday, November 1st at the following locations:
