Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus and Division of Aging Services Director John Beale have announced the 2010 Senior Citizen Summer Picnic Schedule.    Residents age 60 and over are invited to mingle and enjoy a free chicken bar-b-que lunch at a picnic in their local area.  The Senior Citizen Picnics are a great opportunity to learn more about the programs and services offered by the Division of Aging Services as well as other County departments such as Veteran Services Agency and Consumer Affairs.  All picnics begin at 12 noon.

“There is positive correlation between socialization and healthy aging,” said County Executive Steinhaus.   “Dutchess County has been recognized at both the national and state for our creative and innovative programs for seniors.   Our successful Senior Picnic Program is just another great example of the good work going on at the Division of Aging Services.”

The summer picnic program is part of the Division of Aging Services’s federally funded nutrition program.   County Executive Steinhaus kicked off the picnic program in 1993 as a fun way for seniors to get together and enjoy a meal in a social atmosphere.

Each year, the picnics are also used as an outreach tool to inform seniors of the services provided by the Division of Aging Services, other County Departments and local community organizations.

Division of Aging Services Director John Beale said, “Our staff is on hand at each of the picnics to answer questions and assist seniors.    Many people may not think about the issues involved with aging, but we want our seniors to know that when the time does come and they need help, they can turn to the Division of Aging Services.”

Last year the Division of Aging Services served approximately 6000 seniors during its summer gatherings.     These summer picnics were made possible through private and public partnerships, including support from many of the local municipalities as well as local businesses.

There are approximately 19 picnics throughout the summer held at various parks in the county.  The picnics are open to senior residents and their guests of the village/town(s) where the specific picnic is held (i.e. the picnic held at Robinson Lane Recreation Park is open to the senior residents of the Town and Village of Wappinger).    Space is limited, therefore reservations and proof of residency are required.    There is a $4 charge for anyone 59 or younger or non-residents guests for all local picnics.
