Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus and Veterans Service Agency Director Nelson Eddy Rivera, USN (Ret) have announced a Veterans Resource Forum for veterans 60 years or older, spouses and/or their caregivers to be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 from 4pm until 6pm at VA Hudson Valley Health Care System – Castle Point Campus located just off Route 9D in the Town of Fishkill.
“Men and women who have previously served in the armed forces and now are planning for retirement from civilian positions, may not be aware of benefits they have earned that could be key components for their future planning,” states County Executive Steinhaus. “This event will help educate veterans and provide an opportunity for them to have their questions answered.”
The Veterans Resources Forum is for men and women, 60 and older, who served on full time active duty in the military or their spouses and/or caregivers to learn how to make the most of the veterans benefits they may be entitled to in order to help with retirement planning strategies, i.e. medical benefits, nursing home benefits, social security, Medicaid and more. Representatives from Department of Veterans Benefits Administration, Veterans Health Administration, Social Security Administration, Dutchess County Office for Aging and Dutchess County Social Services will be on hand to share information about services available.
Gerald Culliton, Director of the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System says, “We are very excited to partner with Dutchess County to highlight VA’s exceptional services for Veterans and their caregivers. For Veterans not enrolled in VA care, representatives will be available to speak with them about eligibility and services available in Dutchess County at Castle Point, Poughkeepsie and Pine Plains.”
Veterans that are not currently registered for medical benefits with the Veterans Health Administration may register at the forum. To expedite registration and determine eligibility, it is recommended veterans bring copies of their discharge papers (DD-214, DD-215, or WD Form) to the forum event.
Veterans Service Agency Director Nelson Eddy Rivera, USN (Ret) said, “Veterans of the United States Armed Forces may be eligible for a broad range of programs and services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal, state and local government agencies. Many of the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces are not aware of Federal Benefits they have earned from their Honorable Service. This forum will provide us an opportunity to share information about the wealth of services available to them and their spouses.”
