Old Hopewell Road in Wappinger Reopens to Traffic
Numerous other Dutchess County road projects including More than 40 miles of paving & repairs underway this summer

Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus and Commissioner of Public Works Charles Traver have announced work has been completed on culvert replacement on Old Hopewell Road in the Town of Wappinger, allowing the road to reopen to traffic last week.

Summer has been a very busy season for the staff of Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW), with numerous bridge and roadwork projects being completed throughout the county. “We have an ambitious number of projects we are working on this summer as we continue to work to improve our county road system,” said County Executive Steinhaus.  “Our Department of Public Works engineering and Highway staff have done a tremendous job orchestrating these complex projects and good weather for much of the season has helped keep us on schedule.”

Crews replaced culvert WP28, located about halfway between Route 9 and the Hughsonville Fire Department near the Rt. 9D/Old Hopewell Road intersection in the Town of Wappinger.  Traffic had been diverted to Middlebush Road while work progressed.

Other road and bridge projects across the county that have been completed or are underway this summer include:

  • North Cross Road bridge in the Town of Hyde Park, which was reopened last week with one lane with alternating traffic directed by a traffic signal. The bridge had been closed for just over one month. The bridge is open to vehicles weighing less than 8 tons.

  • Work on two bridges is underway in the Town of Dover on Ridge Road and Limeklin Road. A temporary bridge structure will reopen Ridge Road to thru traffic by the first week of September. Bridge D13 on Limekiln Road over the Tenmile River in the Town of Dover is on track to reopen in October. The D13 project is being fully funded with federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) dollars.

  • In the Town of Amenia, bridge A16 over the Mill Brook on Amenia Union Road has also been closed all summer. Final work is now underway and the bridge is expected to reopen to traffic on or about September 10th.  This bridge project was also fully funded by ARRA dollars.

  • More than 20 miles of county roadways have been, or will soon be, paved throughout Dutchess County. Nearly 10 miles of roadway were paved using ARRA funds. Road sections include:

    • Lime Kiln Road (CR 27) in the Town of East Fishkill, more than one mile paved between 1-84 and NYS Route 52.
    • Osborne Hill Road (CR 35) in the Towns of Wappinger and Fishkill, over two miles paved between Route 9 and Baxtertown Road.
    • Vassar Road (CR 77) in the Town of Poughkeepsie, nearly four miles paved between Route 9 and the intersection of Route 376 & Spackenkill Road.
    • Myers Corners Road (CR 93) in the Town of Wappinger, more than two  miles paved from Route 9 and the intersection All Angels Hill Road (CR 93), and almost one half mile paved between Montfort Road and Route 376.
    • Smithfield Road (CR 5) in the Towns of Amenia and Northeast, nearly three miles paved between CR 83 and Charlie Hill Road.
    • North Quaker Lane (CR16) in the Town of Hyde Park, four miles paved between CR 41 and CR 14.
    • Holmes Road/Milltown Road in the Towns of East Fishkill and Pawling,  2 miles paved between Route 52 and Route 216.

  • Over 20 miles of county roadways have been, or will soon be, repaired (patching, wheel rut repairs, etc.) throughout Dutchess County. Roadways include:

    • Beekman Road (CR 9) in the Towns of East Fishkill/Beekman.
    • Clinton Hollow Road (CR 18) in the Town of Clinton.
    • Slate Quarrry Road (CR 19) in the Town of Rhinebeck.
    • West Dover Road (CR 20) in the Towns of Pawling and Dover.
    • Red Oaks Mill Road (CR 44) in the Town of LaGrange.
    • Freedom Road (CR 47) in the Towns of LaGrange and Pleasant Valley.
    • Mt. Ross Road (CR 50) in the Town of Pine Plains.
    • All Angels Hill Road (CR 94) in the Town of Wappinger.

Projects have been preformed by a combination of County DPW Highway staff and private companies who were awarded contracts based on lowest bid.
