Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced the Dutchess County Department of Health will once again partner with All Sport Health and Fitness, Astor Services for Children and Families, Children's Medical Group, Literacy Connections, and Greater Newburgh YMCA for the 5th Annual Great Halloween Candy Exchange Program on Monday, November 1st from 2:30pm to 6:30pm at various locations throughout the county. Children can donate a pound of Halloween trick-or-treat candy to be shipped to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
For every pound of candy donated at one of the designated drop-off sites, children will receive a free, age-appropriate new book or a fun pass to East Fishkill Golf Center for mini-golf, Fun Central for mini-golf, Hyde Park Roller Magic, McCann Ice Arena, or All Sport Health and Fitness. The goal of the program is to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity as well as help children develop a love for reading and physical activity.
“Our Great Halloween Candy Exchange Program has been a tremendous success for several years now, promoting good health for children and demonstrating support for our troops serving overseas,” said County Executive Steinhaus. “It is a great way for families to reinforce the values of sharing, literacy, and the importance of physical activity to prevent childhood obesity.”
The following is taken from a thank you letter sent by LTC Mark C. Gagnon, US Army after receiving Halloween candy in November 2009:
"On behalf of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines of the Multi-National Force Intelligence Directorate, I want to thank you, the Dutchess County Department of Health, the Great Halloween Candy Exchange and the children for the wonderful letters and Halloween Candy….. The candy was in great condition and everyone really enjoyed it. This really made everyone’s day and put a smile on a lot of faces. It is always nice to know that folks support us back in the State. Thanks again for your time and effort in bringing us a little piece of home out to us in Iraq."
