County-City Partnership to Make First Time Home Purchase Easier
Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus and City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik have announced a partnership with NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County to consolidate the County and City’s First Time Homebuyer Programs. This service consolidation will make the home ownership experience easier for first time homebuyers.
“This County/City partnership with the HomeOwnership Center will streamline administration, lower administrative costs, and most importantly, make the application process more user-friendly for homebuyers,” said County Executive Steinhaus. “Reorganizing and simplifying this process is an important step to helping income eligible families become homeowners.”
The Dutchess County/City of Poughkeepsie First Time Homebuyer Program provides up to $10,000 to assist with the down payment and closing costs associated with the purchase of a home by an income eligible first time homebuyer. Eligibility guidelines are available at: http://www.hudsonriverhousing.org/education.html
Both Dutchess County and City of Poughkeepsie governments have worked with the HomeOwnership Center since its inception in 2007. NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County is a division of Hudson River Housing and serves as a one-stop shop to provide all of the services and training customers need to shop for, purchase, and maintain a home.
In early 2010, the HomeOwnership Center became the sole entry point to the County’s First Time Homebuyer Program, accepting applications, reviewing clients for eligibility, and providing individualized education based on a household’s needs. Once the household was ready to purchase, the Center would forward the application to the County for final review, approval, and processing.
The new agreement will now make the HomeOwnership Center the sole entry point for City of Poughkeepsie homebuyers as well. The HomeOwnershipCenter will also take over the final review, approval and processing of the homeowner’s contract, which will expedite the process for homebuyers and allow them to deal with just one organization during the application and contract process. The HomeOwnership Center will also increase the marketing outreach for the First Time Homebuyer Program through its extensive network of realtors and banks.
City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik said, “Centralizing these programs under the HomeOwnership Center creates ‘one stop shopping’ for first-time homebuyers and helps ensure they are taking advantage of all of the resources available to them.”
According to Mary Linge, Director of the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center, “Homeownership remains an important part of our economy, and the HomeOwnership Center is committed to continuing to assist people to work towards that accomplishment. With appropriate guidance and support, families in Dutchess County can be properly educated and prepared to purchase a home, and be successful.”
