Dutchess County Introduces Recycling Container Loan Program

Poughkeepsie...The Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management has introduced a recycling container loan program to make it easy for community groups, municipalities, non-profit organizations, businesses, and other agencies to easily collect and recycle cans and bottles at public events in Dutchess County. The new ClearStream containers are simple to transport and setup and are a great no-cost way to increase recycling and environmental awareness in the community.

“Organizations hosting public events are encouraged to take advantage of these recycling bins, where cans and bottles can be collected for deposit redemption or recycling. The clearly marked bins are easy to spot and encourage event participants to do their part in the County’s recycling efforts,” stated Lindsay Carille, Deputy Commissioner of the Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management.

The recycling container loan program is designed to foster the proper disposal of cans and bottles. Last year, billions of aluminum cans and plastic and glass bottles were thrown in landfills across the United States. The Division of Solid Waste Management has up to 30 recycling containers to lend for short-term events. Containers are loaned on a first-come, first-serve basis, and can be borrowed for up to four days. Any number or all of the containers may be reserved at once, based on availability. Two clear recycling bags are provided with each container.

To reserve one or more containers, event hosts simply complete a loan application and agreement form available online at the county’s website www.dutchessny.gov . Reservations are requested at least two weeks in advance. Containers are picked up and returned to the Division of Solid Waste Management, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie. A refundable deposit is required for reservation. The deposit is refunded upon return of the containers in a clean, workable condition.

The introduction of the recycling bin program is among the action steps outlined in Rethinking Waste – the County’s solid waste management plan that was released last year. The goal of the Rethinking Waste plan is to increase the overall recycling rate in Dutchess County to nearly 60% by 2022.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro noted, “We are making progress in our goal to increase the recycling rate. The new recycling bin program is another great way for people to take an active role in the recycling effort. So if you are planning a big event, reach out and take advantage of these bins to promote recycling. If you are attending an event and see the bins – use them! We all have a role to play in protecting our environment and this is a simple way to pitch in.”
