Tips for Dealing with Summer Heat
From Beacon to Red Hook, Poughkeepsie to Dover Plains, temperatures are expected to eclipse 90° for the remainder of the week and into the weekend. Residents, particularly children and the elderly, should take precautions to guard against the extreme heat.
Please check on your older neighbors and offer assistance, if they need it. Wearing light clothing, staying hydrated, spending time in air-conditioned spaces like libraries and malls and reducing strenuous activities are just a few ways to protect yourself from this week’s weather.
It's also important to protect your pets during the heat. Steps such as supplying your pet with cool water, shade outside or shelter inside, and never leaving a pet unattended in a parked car are ways to keep your pet safe during the summer.
The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response has compiled tips for keeping yourself and your pets safe during the summer heat. Those tips can be found by clicking here.
During this week’s heat, Dutchess County parks like Bowdoin Park in Poughkeepsie and Wilcox Park in Milan offer opportunities to cool off.
Older residents are encouraged to visit one of the Dutchess County Office for the Aging’s Senior Friendship Centers or enjoy a “Brain Game” class to beat the heat. A list of "Brain Game" dates and locations is available by clicking here.
