Director of Public Health Nursing at Dutchess County Department of Health Named

Poughkeepsie...Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus joined Dr. Michael C. Caldwell, Commissioner of the Dutchess County Department of Health in announcing the selection of Antonia (Toni) Brewer as Director of Public Health Nursing for the Dutchess County Department of Health.

County Executive Steinhaus stated, “Toni Brewer has been with the Department of Health for over twenty years in a series of successively challenging roles.  She has been the Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing for the past eleven years and has demonstrated leadership skills, administrative expertise as well as compassion in serving our residents.  Her experience and commitment to Dutchess County is well proven and I am pleased to welcome her to her new position.”

Dr. Caldwell added, “I am delighted to join County Executive Steinhaus in announcing the selection of Ms. Brewer to this critical position. I have worked with Toni since I arrived at the Department of Health over ten years ago.  She is a strong clinical leader who embraces new ideas and is able to bring everyone together to achieve stronger results which benefit the Department and our community.”

Ms. Brewer graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Dutchess Community College and Mount Saint Mary’s College, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.  She went on to Columbia University where she received her Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration.  Antonia Brewer started her career as a staff registered nurse at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.  Ms. Brewer joined county government in 1981 as a public health nurse.  She was promoted to Supervising Public Health Nurse in 1990 and to Assistant Director in 1993.  In addition to her position with the County, Ms. Brewer has served as a member of various community organizations including the New York State Nurses Association, the Coalition against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Child Care Council of Dutchess County and the March of Dimes.

“I am honored that Mr. Steinhaus and Dr. Caldwell have selected me to serve as the Director of Public Health Nursing for the County’s Department of Health.  I appreciate their confidence and support.  I look forward to working with the Executive, the Legislature, our other County Departments, my colleagues and staff within the Department of Health as well as our many public health partners to address the diverse public health needs of our community,” Brewer said.

The Director of Public Health Nursing is responsible for the Divisions of Nursing, Communicable Disease Control, and Children’s Special Services.  This represents nearly one-half of the Department of Health.  The Director reports directly to the Commissioner of Health and is involved in all of the clinically related work that encompasses the Department of Health.  She works closely with the Department’s Clinical Physician and is a key leader and facilitator with a wide range of community partners including the County’s hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other medical providers.

Ms. Brewer and her husband Caulie are the proud parents of three children Katelyn, Adam and Jessica.

The position became vacant with the resignation of former Director Patricia Stumpf in July of this year.  A resolution will be forwarded to the Dutchess County Legislature for their review and approval at their next regularly scheduled meeting.

The Dutchess County Department of Health is located at 387 Main Street, Poughkeepsie and may be reached at 845/486-3432.
