Steinhaus Selected For Workforce Development Conference Panel

Poughkeepsie, NY - Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has been invited to Albany to participate as a panel member at the 1999 Spring Workforce Development Conference jointly sponsored by the New York State Department of Labor and the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals. He has been selected to participate in the panel discussion entitled "Local Elected Officials Speak Out: Why Workforce Development is Important" on Wednesday, May 26 from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized for all our hard work and what we have been able to achieve. But I must add that it has been a group effort," Steinhaus said. "Workforce development and economic development, unfortunately, does not just happen by itself. It takes a major commitment by both public and private sector leaders. At this conference the panelists will be sharing those programs and initiatives which have worked for them."

The intent of the panel on which County Executive Steinhaus will participate is to encourage chief elected officials to talk about the Federal Workforce Investment Act and their reactions and impressions to local implementation. They will also discuss the best ways for local employment and training agencies to approach businesses to encourage involvement and enlist support for a strong local workforce development system.

The Workforce Investment Act provides that the County Executive, as an elected official, appoint a Workforce Investment Board of which 5 1 % would be from private industry. This board would help create the initiatives necessary to establish a strong workforce development system. "Many of the components of the Workforce Investment Act have already been implemented in Dutchess County," stated Steinhaus. "We have already developed a Workforce Group, which has been very instrumental in securing employers like the GAP and Sikorsky Helicopters. We have also forged ahead with programs like WorkNow with the Chamber of  Commerce creating a partnership with the Department of Social Services and the Labor Department. In New York State, Dutchess County is a forerunner in workforce development."

"Dutchess County has been very successful in its workforce development efforts under the leadership of County Executive Bill Steinhaus. He will be a valuable contribution to the conference," said James T. Dillon, Executive Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Labor.

"I believe Bill Steinhaus has one of the clearest understandings of how to solve this workforce challenge," said John Twomey, the Executive Director of the New York Training and Employment Professionals. "He has demonstrated his leadership in this area with an enviable track record. He has strong and positive ideas which will make him an asset at our conference."

Steinhaus has also been a member of Governor Pataki's Design Team for the State Workforce Investment Board.

The 1999 Spring Workforce Development Conference will be held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany from Tuesday, May 25 through Thursday, May 27.
