Steinhaus Appoints Deputy Director of Veterans Affairs

Poughkeepsie, NY - County Executive William R. Steinhaus today is pleased to announce his appointment of Nelson E. Rivera as Deputy Director of the Dutchess County Office of Veterans Affairs. The position of Deputy Director is a permanent position responsible for assisting the Director of Veterans Affairs in the administration of the veteran's service program in Dutchess County.

"I am delighted to be able to appoint such a high caliber individual as Mr. Rivera to this important post of Deputy Director of Veterans Affairs," Steinhaus stated. "Not only has Mr. Rivera served his country on Active Duty in the United States Navy from 1975 to 1995, he has also served his fellow veterans in Dutchess County while working at the Poughkeepsie Veterans Clinic."

Rivera served as an Administrative Assistant of the Naval Forces Division of the U.S. Military Training Mission in Saudi Arabia from 1991 to 1995. Prior to that he was an Administrative Supervisor on Carrier Air Wing Three on board the Carrier US S John F. Kennedy and an Assistant Military Management Officer at the Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia.

"Mr. Rivera's administrative military experience, coupled with the dedication to his fellow veterans exhibited during his years at the Veteran Hospital, make him a perfect choice for a position in which he will be counseling veterans on the types of benefits available to them," Steinhaus said. "I feel this position should be filled by someone who truly is committed to those who have served this country by placing their lives on the line to protect our freedoms."

"It is truly an honor to be trusted with this responsibility," Rivera said. "I thank County Executive Steinhaus, and all the veterans I will serve for placing their faith in me."

The Deputy Director of Veterans Affairs will earn $40,000 annually. Rivera will assume his duties as Deputy Director on November 8, 1999.
