Poughkeepsie... Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus is pleased to announce his selection of Valerie J. Sommerville as Dutchess County Budget Director. Ms. Sommerville’s appointment is effective immediately. Sommerville resides in Millbrook.
The County Executive stated, “Sommerville is a top notch professional with sound and solid knowledge of the important role of the Dutchess County Budget Office. During her tenure Valerie has continued to take on increased responsibilities gaining a wealth of experience that will serve the county well.”
Ms. Sommerville attended Dutchess Community College and has been in public service with the county’s Budget Office since 1992, serving the last 12 years as a Research Analyst until she was appointed Acting Budget Director by Steinhaus in June 2003.
The County Executive added, “Ms. Sommerville has distinguished herself by her successful stewardship of the development and adoption of the 2004 budget and over the recent months has continued to demonstrate her skills and commitment to the responsibilities of Budget Director. I have every trust and confidence she will do an excellent job in her position.”
“I am honored County Executive Steinhaus has selected me as Budget Director, and I appreciate his confidence and support. I look forward to working with the Executive Office, county departments and the Legislature to address the fiscal challenges facing the county,” Sommerville said.
The Budget Director is responsible for the preparation, implementation and administration of the $342 million county operating budget, involving responsibility for the formulation of major financial and fiscal policies under the general direction of the County Executive. The Budget Director also serves as a member of the capital projects committee, labor negotiations team and interacts with the County Legislature and its committees to present and justify budget recommendations of the County Executive.
The position became vacant in March 2003 with the retirement of former Budget Director Kevin Fish.
