Beacon Youth Education & Development Program to Receive Aid from County

Poughkeepsie. . . County Executive William R. Steinhaus announced the signing of an agreement between the County Youth Bureau and the Beacon Community Center amounting to $25,600 to assist in funding their Youth Education & Development Program.

The Centerís goal is to serve almost 200 youth. Included are after-school homework and tutoring assistance classes for 80 elementary and junior high students to improve their study skills and academic performance. Additionally, open basketball sessions and a year-round Teen Drop-In Center are offered for high school students.

Mr. Steinhaus said, "At the Beacon Community Center, the youth not only work at their studies, but are encouraged to socialize, play basketball, listen to music and obtain information in a safe, supervised environment. They learn to use peaceful methods to resolve disagreements. It is hoped that the long-term outcome of this program will be the successful completion of a secondary education by the participants and a demonstrated respect for themselves, parents, peers and staff members."
