County Executive Steinhaus Seeks Support
For Newburgh-Beacon Ferry Service

Poughkeepsie…Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus is asking for help from our local Congressional delegation to secure $2.5 million in discretionary funds in the 2003 Federal Transportation Appropriations for a Newburgh-Beacon ferry service.  The funds would be used to help design and initiate a commuter ferry vessel service, including such things as landside improvements (docks and launching sites), a ferry vessel and operational support.

In his letter to Congressional members Kelly, Sweeney, Hinchey, and Gilman, Steinhaus pointed to the success of the existing Haverstraw-Ossining service, which has been well received by both communities and elected officials.  He said, "I will work in coordination with MTA Metro-North Railroad, the New York State Department of Transportation and the Cities of Beacon and Newburgh on efforts to plan and implement this service…The service will be designed to alleviate local traffic in the Beacon station area, to address regional traffic congestion and to improve travel time for Orange County residents accessing Metro-North’s Beacon Station.”  Each day 1600 commuters board trains in Beacon; approximately half of whom come from Orange County.

If this project is successful, Steinhaus feels the regional ferry-to-rail commute will be further enhanced and it will open the door for other local water-based travel to tap into the tourist and discretionary mid-day markets.  Beacon and Newburgh and the large number of daily commuters in both communities would benefit from this initiative if the County Executive's bid for 2003 funding is granted.
