Poughkeepsie-Dutchess County Transportation Council (PDCTC) and the Town of East Fishkill  Announce   Development of Joint Project in Hamlet of Hopewell

Poughkeepsie...The Poughkeepsie-Dutchess County Transportation Council (PDCTC) and the Town of East Fishkill have announced the development of a joint project in the Hamlet of Hopewell. Chairman of the PDCTC, Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus noted that, "The Hopewell Hamlet Pedestrian Plan’s purpose is to develop a plan for the Hamlet of Hopewell in the Town of East Fishkill that will address the Hamlet’s current and future pedestrian mobility needs. The project also advances the Dutchess County Greenway Connections Program, which seeks to build a network of connecting routes, paths and trails in the County."

Peter Idema, East Fishkill Supervisor, added, "The plan is consistent with the Town of East Fishkill’s Master Plan, which is currently under review. Our intent is to make the Hamlet more ‘user friendly’ and provide mobility and access for those without cars."

Dutchess County has hired the firm of Urbitran Associates to assist the PDCTC with this project. Staff members at the two agencies have been working with the consultants to collect and organize existing maps, data and reports in the study area. In addition, stakeholders have been identified to help determine some of the specific issues that the plan should address and to help guide the development of the plan over the next six months.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the East Fishkill Town Hall to provide an opportunity for local residents, business owners and other interested individuals to participate in the planning process for the Pedestrian Plan. The meeting will feature a short presentation by the consultants on the current conditions in the Hamlet and a number of improvement options, followed by an open comment session to allow people to discuss the current pedestrian environment as well as suggestions for improvement.

Dial-A-Ride service will be available to East Fishkill residents who need transportation to attend the meeting. For reservations contact Peter Idema’s office at 221-4303 by Friday, January 19, 2001.

The Poughkeepsie-Dutchess County Transportation Council is the regional transportation planning organization for Dutchess County and the Town of Lloyd in Ulster County. Under the Chairmanship of County Executive Steinhaus, the PDCTC includes representatives from Ulster County, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and local municipalities.
