Poughkeepsie... County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $416,000 to the county through HUDís Supportive Housing Program.

According to County Executive Steinhaus, "These funds were awarded to the county through a national competition, and as part of the countyís effort to create a Continuum of Care System to address the needs of the homeless throughout Dutchess County, will be used to assist with the continued operation of Hudson River Housingís Hillcrest House Transitional Housing Program. "

Hillcrest House was opened in 1992 by Hudson River Housing to provide low cost housing for up to 60 formerly-homeless persons. In addition to housing, residents at Hillcrest House receive case management, food service and 24-hour supervision. The case management allows individuals to be linked to community services for assistance with skill development, vocational training, independent living skills and mental health programs.

The grant will support the operation of Hillcrest House for the next three years and is expected to serve approximately 150 people over the term of the grant.

The application is coordinated by the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development with assistance from the Dutchess County Housing Consortium, consisting of over 40 public, private and non-profit organizations whose goal is to address the needs of the homeless in Dutchess County.
