County Executive Announces HUD Funding for
Homeless to Local Agencies

Poughkeepsie. . . County Executive William R. Steinhaus is pleased to announce the County has won $302,013 in funding from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Supportive Housing Program.  This funding is to assist homeless persons and will be directed to Grace Smith House, Hudson River Housing and Gateway Community Industries.

According to Steinhaus, “These funds will be used to provide much-needed supportive housing and services through three of our most valued local human service agencies.  The County was pleased to develop and advocate for this application to HUD on behalf of the participating agencies and is even more pleased to have been successful in obtaining this funding, since it demonstrates the outstanding results that can be achieved through collaborative efforts.”

Grace Smith House will receive $55,156 to provide housing advocacy and follow-up services to victims of domestic violence as they transition from the agency’s Northeast Shelter to independent, permanent housing.  It is anticipated that this project will assist up to 125 families over the three-year grant period.

Hudson River Housing will receive $126,866 to provide assistance for their River Haven Transitional Living Program.  These funds will be used for rental assistance and support services for two of the units at the program.  These units will be occupied by homeless youth and this program will reach 24 youth during the three-year grant period.

Gateway Community Industries, which will lease three one-bedroom apartments and provide supportive services for homeless adults who are recovering from mental illness and/or substance abuse, will receive $119,991.  Gateway’s program will assist eight individuals over the three-year grant period.

County Executive Steinhaus has forwarded a resolution to the Dutchess County Legislature for formal receipt of the grant.
