County Supports Harlem Valley Teen Program

Poughkeepsie… County Executive William R. Steinhaus announced a grant for $10,800 to the North East Community Center in Millerton to assist in the implementation and operation of their Teen Leadership Program.  The program is designed to address the social and recreational needs of youth, ages 13-18, in the rural Harlem Valley. Grant money for the program was directed through the Dutchess County Youth Bureau.

The County Executive noted, “I am pleased we can provide support to this important teen program sponsored by the North East Community Center.  The program’s activities are designed to develop the assets, or strengths, that each teen brings with him or her.  Our goal is to help our young people grow and become healthy and responsible adults.”

The Teen Leadership Program provides a safe place for teens to go after school and evenings. In this program, teens define programs and objectives, organize activities, and gain exposure to a wide range of experiences beyond their every day lives in Dutchess County. They will participate in community service, workshops in the visual and performing arts, and recreational activities. They will plan social events (dances, a Haunted House) and they will have the opportunity to be matched with a mentor or tutor, and to explore the world of work.

Most fundamentally, the teens will increase their own positive identity and will enjoy an expanded support structure.

For individuals in the greater Millerton area wanting more information about this program, please contact the Dutchess County Youth Bureau at (845) 486-3660.
