Steinhaus Announces Parks Summer Season
County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced the kickoff of the county summer park season with extended operating hours at our County Park system. “I am pleased to announce the return to the summer schedule for our facilities at Bowdoin Park, Wilcox Park, and our newest park the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, said Steinhaus. The County Executive continued, “I want to encourage families and kids of all ages to get out to our county parks and enjoy these wonderful facilities. With the increased cost for gasoline we want families who may be staying local this summer to know about all the terrific opportunities and facilities available at our county operated parks. In particular, I want to mention the availability of family camping and swimming at Wilcox Park. Plus, Bowdoin Park has one of the jewels of our park system, Maple Knoll Lodge and cabins. Maple Knoll is a fully restored lodge with tremendous views of the Hudson River.” The lodge has a large multipurpose area with fireplace, simple kitchen, four bedrooms, men’s, women’s and handicapped bathrooms and shower facilities. So if you are staying local this summer but want to “get away”, inquire about these wonderful facilities by calling (845) 298-4600 for Bowdoin Park or (845) 758-6100 for Wilcox Park.”
Bowdoin Park located off Sheafe Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie will be open seven days a week from 9:00am to 8:00pm through Labor Day. Bowdoin Park has pavilions, soccer and baseball fields, an extensive handicapped accessible “Kids Kingdom” playground with water spraying turtles, a Nature Center and miles of nature trails including the Maple Knoll Boardwalk, a favorite spot for those who enjoy observing birds and a wide variety of plant and animal species. In addition to the recently renovated Maple Knoll lodge and Cabins the historic Ellessdie Chapel (originally constructed in 1840) and the Park’s Community Center are available to the public for special events and private parties. There is no entrance fee for Bowdoin Park.
Wilcox Park located on Route 199 in the Town of Milan is 615 acres of varied and interesting woodlands and level or rolling fields. A creek runs through the park forming two small lakes, which offer fishing, non-motorized boat rentals and swimming. The entrance fee for Wilcox is only $4.00 per car. The Park offers a swimming facility with a sandy beach, lifeguards, and a bathhouse as well as a playground, ball fields, miniature golf, and a campground with 10 RV sites and 17 tent sites. Hiking trails and picnic grounds are open year round. Below is the 2001 Wilcox Park summer schedule for these activities:
The Harlem Valley Rail Trail, an eight mile paved multi use trail extends from Mechanic Street in Amenia to Route 44 in the Village of Millerton. It is open from dusk to dawn seven days a week. Parking is available in lots located on Mechanic Street in Amenia and off Coleman Station Road (CR 58) in the Town of Northeast. A variety of events have been scheduled for the rail trail this summer, starting with the Dutchess County Arts Council’s “Ride, Roll and Rumble” on June 2nd.
