Steinhaus Renews Funding for Rhinecliff Youth Program

Poughkeepsie… County Executive William R. Steinhaus has approved a $3,500 grant for the Community House Teen Center at the Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff. The program provides after-school recreational activities in a supervised setting for young people through the Dutchess County Youth Bureau.

According to County Executive Steinhaus, “The Community House Teen Center provides a positive place for youth to go after school. It is a place where they can hang out and enjoy themselves, and where they can participate in activities either on their own or in groups in a safe, supervised environment.”

The Community House Teen Center, which has been in operation since 1975, is located in the basement of the Morton Memorial Library in the hamlet of Rhinecliff.  The Center is open to children of all ages weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m., and there is a special teen night for those 13 and over on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. The program is expected to reach 85 children this year, and offers a variety of activities that include pool, shuffleboard, table games, video equipment, arts and crafts, community projects and special seasonal projects.

The daily activities planned at the Center promote and reinforce positive social skills and responsible behavior by teaching good sportsmanship, teamwork, and appropriate social interactions. The program supports families and encourages the structured use of time and community involvement for the children. It is the only free, year-round recreational program available in the area.

County Executive Steinhaus added, “Programs like the Community House Teen Center provide a place where children can go to get involved in recreational activities, which helps to combat the boredom that regrettably can lead young people to turn to drugs, alcohol or crime.  We are committed to preventive strategies and programs which support our positive development in our youth.”
