County Executive Signs Contracts for Programs to Provide Safe Shelter for Youths

Poughkeepsie . . . Dutchess County Executive, William R. Steinhaus, has signed an agreement with Hudson River Housing to provide the River Haven Program and the River Haven Independent Living Program with $237,188 of state and county funding.

River Haven is an emergency shelter and crisis center providing 24-hour intervention services, family, individual and group counseling, emergency shelter, referral services, assistance with basic needs, and a street-based outreach. It is hoped that the program will reach 750 youth and their families through crisis intervention services and provide safe, emergency housing to 175 youth throughout 2001.

Another program administered by Hudson River Housing is the River Haven Independent Living Program. Targeted to reach 120 youth ages 16-20, this program provides needed services and increases the teenagersí knowledge of independent living skills. Through this support program, "older" youth will begin to develop methods to stabilize their lives, plan for the future and obtain employment or vocational training.

The County Executive noted, "These programs give hope to young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn to seek something as basic as a safe place to sleep. River Haven not only provides emergency shelter, but seeks to encourage voluntary crisis intervention to enable these young people to begin to stabilize their lives and choose safer alternatives than street life. Referral and advocacy services are offered to youth and their families in the hope of developing plans for long-term living arrangements and the youth will be prepared for their eventual economic self-sufficiency."

Grant funding for these programs, to be administered by Hudson River Housing, was obtained by the Dutchess County Youth Bureau and from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
