Dutchess County Releases Their 2012-2013 Flu Clinic Schedule

Poughkeepsie The Dutchess County Department of Health announced the 2012 Adult Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinics schedule.  Five clinics will be hosted at various locations throughout the county from October 12th to November 28th.

“Getting the flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting yourself against this serious disease,” said Commissioner of Health Michael C. Caldwell, MD, MPH. “Everyone six months and older should get their flu vaccination, especially pregnant women and those with health conditions such as diabetes which are at higher risk for flu complications.  Our Adult Flu Clinics are one way you can defend yourself and your family against the flu.”

Additionally this year, flu and pneumonia vaccinations as well as other Adult Immunizations such as the Pertussis Vaccine will be available at the Department of Health’s weekly Adult Immunization and Screening Clinics held Mondays at their Main Street office location in the City of Poughkeepsie beginning October 15th.

The flu shot will be $32, FluMist will be $40, and the fee for the pneumonia vaccine is $75. Influenza and Pneumococcal vaccines are covered by Medicare Part B; individuals must bring card to the clinic.  Adults enrolled in Medicare HMOs may be required to pay the fee.

In addition, residents are urged to take everyday preventive steps like covering their cough, staying home when they are sick, and frequent handwashing to reduce the spread of germs.

“As we have seen this year, the flu season is not limited to just the cold, winter months,” said Caldwell.  “It should not be dismissed as nothing more than a cold, but rather one that can seriously impact our community’s health.”  Influenza is among the most common respiratory illnesses in the United States, infecting millions of people every flu season and can lead to hospitalization and death, so it is important to take prevention seriously Caldwell added.

Convenient online registration for all flu clinics is available.  Interested individuals may register and find more information about flu immunization online at www.dutchessny.gov and clicking the “What to Do About Flu” button, or log onto http://bit.ly/DCFluShots. Those without internet access may call the Department of Health's Flu Information line at (845) 486-3435 or call to register at (845) 486-3419.
