National Public Health Week 2013

The 18th annual National Public Health week is April 1-5, 2013. This year’s theme for National Public Health Week is “Public Health is Return on Investment: Save lives, Save money”. The theme is designed to recognize the tremendous value of public health in our lives- at home in schools, at work, on the move and in the community.

"Return on investment can be measured in lives saved, diseases and injuries prevented and costs avoided thanks to community based prevention and health promotion efforts. Few investments are as far reaching and life changing as investments in evidence based public health," said Michael C. Caldwell, MD, MPH, Dutchess County Commissioner of Health.

National Public Health Week provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of public health.  The Dutchess County Department of Health will be posting throughout the week daily messages on the County’swebsite www.dutchessny.gov, which address key public health issues for our community and ways for residents to get involved.

The concept of Public Health’s Return on investment is not a new one. Public Health touches every part of our daily lives- healthy food, safe water, access to defibrillators, immunization and activities to prevent and mitigate chronic disease.

"Join the Dutchess County Department of Health each day to learn how small changes within our own lives can keep Dutchess County as one of the healthiest counties in the state," concluded Dr. Caldwell.
