Dutchess County Releases 2013 Flu Clinic Schedule

Poughkeepsie… The Dutchess County Department of Health announced the 2013 Adult Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinic schedule.

“One of the most important vaccines people of all ages should consider to protect themselves is the Influenza vaccine,” said Acting Commissioner of Health Kari Reiber, MD.  “Everyone six months and older should get their flu vaccination, especially pregnant women and those with health conditions such as diabetes which are at higher risk for flu complications.  There are several different formulations available:  injection, nasal spray, and new this year is a non-egg based vaccine. Speak to your healthcare provider about which vaccine is right for you.”

In addition to offering flu and pneumonia vaccinations at the Department’s Adult Immunization and Screening Clinic, they will be holding a public flu and pneumonia vaccine clinic on October 11th from 10am–noon at the Fishkill Baptist Church located at 107 Route 82 in Fishkill, NY and on November 8th from 10am–noon at the Cornell Cooperative Extension located at 2715 Route 44, Millbrook, NY.

The flu shot will be $35, FluMist will be $45, and the fee for the pneumonia vaccine is $85. Influenza and Pneumococcal vaccines are covered by Medicare Part B; individuals must bring card to the clinic.  Adults enrolled in Medicare HMOs may be required to pay the fee.

“Fortunately, flu vaccine is readily available in Dutchess County through healthcare providers and pharmacies.  For those without a healthcare provider the DCDOH clinics can offer the underinsured and uninsured vaccination against the flu as well as an opportunity to find out where they can receive regular health care,” said Dr. Reiber.   “Influenza is among the most common respiratory illnesses in the United States, infecting millions of people every flu season and can lead to hospitalization and death.”

In addition, residents are reminded to take everyday preventive measures like covering their cough, staying home when they are sick, and frequent handwashing to reduce the spread of germs.

The Adult Flu Clinics will offer vaccine to anyone 18 and older wishing to protect themselves against influenza. Convenient online registration for all flu clinics is available.  Interested individuals may register and find more information about flu immunization online at www.dutchessny.gov and clicking the “What to Do About Flu” button.  For more information, please call the Department of Health's Flu Information line at (845) 486-3435 or call to register at (845) 486-3419.
