DC BOH Presents 2014 Public Health Partnership Award

Poughkeepsie……….The Dutchess County Board of Health will be presenting its annual Public Health Partnership Awards on April 7, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the Legislative Chambers, 6th Floor, 22 Market Street, Poughkeepsie, New York.

The Public Health Partnership Award is designed to provide recognition and appreciation during National Public Health Week for contributions to the health of the community, reflecting the spirit of creating healthy communities, and to increase public awareness of the role and contribution of partners who demonstrate leadership, innovation, and community involvement.

The 2014 Public Health Partnership Award will be presented to:

• William S. Augerson, MD,   Dutchess County Board of Health
• Nutrition Information Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County

William S. Augerson, MD is an internist who has been a member of the Dutchess County Board of Health since 2002 and past President.  He is a volunteer of the Dutchess County Medical Reserve Corps and a member of the Dutchess County Medical Society.  Dr. Augerson served in the Navy and for 29 years in the Army practicing as primary care physician, emergency physician, flight surgeon, and internal medicine specialist.  Dr Augerson was assigned to senior positions at a variety of field medical, research and hospitals including Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the 2nd General Hospital-Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where he was Chief of professional services and then Commander.  He served as Director Health Care Operations-Office of the Army Surgeon General, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense – Health Plans Programs and Systems-Office of the Secretary of Defense and retired from the Army with the rank of General.

After retiring from the Army, Dr Augerson was Vice President Environmental Health and Safety for 10 years at Arthur D. Little Inc., Cambridge, MA.  He also served as a consultant for a variety of government agencies, corporations and insurance firms.  Dr. Augerson has served on a variety of Town of Washington, Millbrook, NY, committees dealing with emergency plans and water supply.  During his tenure as president of the Dutchess County Board of Health, Dr. Augerson remained an advocate of public health, raising awareness about tobacco, tick-borne disease and  obesity to name a few.

Nutrition Information Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County, for the past 15 years has provided education to the residents of Dutchess County with a focus on individual and community food security, chronic disease prevention (including childhood obesity), promotion of local foods, food access and preservation and school wellness.  They have also facilitated systems and environmental change to improve wellness in various settings.  Tens of thousands of Dutchess County residents have completed as many as 12 sessions of education through the Eat Smart New York! Program in Dutchess County.

Community involvement has been key to the success of the Nutrition Information Program. Volunteers acting on behalf of various organizations have been recruited and trained to help deliver education, food demonstrations and conduct events in the community.  These community volunteers have also helped with translation and transportation to better serve the needs of clients.

DCDOH Board President Dr. Lhungay stated, “The Board received several nominations, but the selected recipients really impressed our members with the level of local community involvement they showed in the respective public health area of concern, from volunteering on the Dutchess County Board of Health for the past 12 years, to providing food, nutrition, wellness and physical activity education for the last 15 years. We celebrate the impact their efforts have made on the health and well being of our county residents.”
