Training Unit

Colonel Michael J. Walters, Jail Administrator

The mission of the Training Unit of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Corrections Division,  is to impart knowledge and pertinent information to the facility staff. This task is accomplished by utilizing a team of staff members that are certified, professional and innovative instructors.

Staff are certified annually in mandated topics such as CPR/First Aid, Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force, Security Topics, Infectious Disease Prevention/Control and Suicide Prevention training.

Staff also receives training on a number of non-mandated topics such as, Cultural Diversity/Sensitivity, Chemical Agents, Leadership, and Effective Communication skills. A great emphasis is placed on the communication skills of staff since they play such an important role when Correction Officers carry out their daily job responsibilities.

Our Training team members are also called upon to conduct training for personnel from other County departments. We have presented CPR and First Aid training, Firearms training, Infectious Disease training and training dealing with Gang Intelligence to other County departments.
