ATV Patrol

Officers on ATV patrolThe Dutchess County Sheriff’s ATV Patrol is comprised of both full-time and part-time patrols.  The full-time patrol is responsible for patrolling the Parks and Rail Trails owned by Dutchess County.  They are always available to respond to incidents which occur in rural setting or where access for police would be limited by normal patrol vehicles.

The Part-time Patrol is used to respond any unusual incidents where ATV’s are needed.

 

Bicycle Patrol

The Bicycle Unit of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office consists of sixteen certified deputies who provide special patrol functions where it is impractical to use motorized vehicles.  They include patrols of:Officers on bike patrol

  • Village & business areas
  • Rail trails
  • Special events
  • Conduct bicycle safety presentations

 

K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office consists of six K-9’s.  They consist of four German Shepherds, a Bloodhound and a Golden Retriever.  The training of these invaluable partners is done at the regional K-9 academy hosted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.  The specialties that our K-9’s are trained in are:

Marine Patrol

The main function of the Marine Patrol is:

- Patrol Hudson River and Whaley Lake
- Enforce Navigation Law and related laws
- Conduct boarding and safety inspections
- Carry out Search and Rescue Missions
- Teach NYS Safe Boating Course

In 2006, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol continued its mission of enhancing boating safety on the Hudson River and Whaley Lake.  This mission was accomplished through continued education and enforcement efforts.

Underwater Search and Recovery unit in the waterMembers of the Marine Patrol conducted over a half dozen NYS Boating Safety Courses for the public.  This resulted in several hundred citizens being educated on boating basics and maritime safety.  The Patrol continued to network with local marinas and boat clubs along the Hudson River in providing information on boating safety and law updates.  The Patrol continued to participate in the lifejacket-loaner program.  With this program, lifejackets are loaned to people for the day if they do not have one or it is deemed unsafe.

Underwater Search and Recovery UnitThe Underwater Search and Recover Unit, also known as our SCUBA Unit started with six members and currently consists of ten members.  Members of the unit are patrol Deputy Sheriffs that also perform this specialized work.  Underwater Search and Recovery members go through a selection process that includes SCUBA experience, physical fitness and decision making.  Once assigned to the unit, members attend specialized courses in topics such as ice rescue, evidence recovery and swift water rescue.  After the basic training, members attend regular training in all aspect of this specialized unit.

Over the past year the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search and Recovery Unit has handled and assisted other police agencies in handling several incidents throughout Dutchess County and adjoining counties.

The Motorcycle Unit of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is equipped with two Harley Davidson Motorcycles.  The unit currently has four deputies assigned.  The unit performs tasks such as:

  • Traffic Enforcement
  • Parades and Details
  • Community Policing

 

Homeland Security

Operation Enduring Freedom September 11, 2001 EmblemProtecting the residents and visitors of Dutchess County from acts of terrorism is a paramount priority of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.  The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies along with government leaders to provide security, design efforts to safeguard the infrastructure and protect county government. The Homeland Security Services Unit is dedicated to maintaining a high level of vigilance to ensure public safety.  

Training Unit

Training unit conducting training session for recruit officerThe Training Unit of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office conducts the New York State – Division of Criminal Justice Services Police Academy for recruit officers.  The academy is accredited by Dutchess Community College and all graduates receive collegiate credit upon graduation. 

The Training Unit also conducts monthly in-service training for members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office in all aspects of law enforcement.  The Training Unit also hosts and conducts specialized and technical police courses for  members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and  other area agencies.

Zone XIV Academy

Since 2000 the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Zone 14 Law Enforcement Academy has trained 140 new recruit officers.  Our office in conjunction with Dutchess Community College offers a certificate program for the recruit officers.  Each recruit receives 16 college credits upon completion of the academy.  Of the 140 recruits that have been trained by the Sheriff’s Office, 45 have continued their education at Dutchess Community College and received their associates degree from the college.
