Update to Beekman fire on 3/24/14

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports updated information in the investigation into the fire in the Town of Beekman on 3/24/14, during which there was a fatality.

The fire occurred at 132 Gold Rd in the Town of Beekman, and the deceased has been positively identified as Thomas J. DeMarco (age 45). Mr. DeMarco was the sole owner and resident of the house and was alone at the time of the fire. Further investigation has revealed that Mr. DeMarco was not killed by the fire, but was killed by a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head before the fire was able to reach him. Fire investigators have not been able to rule out that Mr. DeMarco set the fire himself, and there is no evidence of an intruder or anyone else having been present at the time. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office is in possession of a suicide note which Mr. DeMarco mailed to another individual before he took his own life. The contents of the note and reasons why Mr. DeMarco ended his life are private matters and will not be disclosed.

The investigation into this case has been closed and labeled as a suicide. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by members of the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division and the Beekman, Union Vale and Pawling Fire Departments.
