Update: arrest made in air conditioner larcenies case

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Michael S. Westpfal, age 51 of Pleasant Valley, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the theft of numerous air conditioner condensers throughout Dutchess County recently. This is an update to the original press release which was posted on 9/4/14.

Information developed through the investigation recently lead to Mr. Westpfal being identified as a person of interest. Mr. Westpfal was located at a residence in the Town of Poughkeepsie at approx. 5:30 am on 9/12/14, and was then interviewed. At the conclusion of the interviews, he was arrested and formally charged in connection with the larcenies. At this time, Mr. Westpfal has been charged with the following:

  • 1 count of Grand Larceny 3rd Degree – Class D Felony (Town of Wappinger).

  • 3 counts of Grand Larceny 4th Degree – Class E Felony (1 count in the Town of LaGrange, 2 counts in the Town of Wappinger).

After being processed, Mr. Westpfal was arraigned on all charges before the Town of LaGrange Court and was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond ($10,000/$20,000 for each jurisdiction - LaGrange and Wappinger). At this time, the investigation is continuing by members of the Sheriff’s Office as well as other police agencies - including the New York State Police, Town of Poughkeepsie Police and Town of Hyde Park Police - and more charges are expected at a later time.

Even though an arrest has been made, members of the general public and business owners are asked to please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Office immediately.

As with any criminal case, the charges described here are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. More information may be released as it becomes available.
