Rail Trail Bridge to be named after fallen Deputy

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office announces that on Thursday October 9, 2014 at 11 am the Dutchess County Rail Trail Bridge over Titusville Road in LaGrange will be named in honor of Deputy Sheriff Erik R. Renninger.

Deputy Renninger died in the line of duty on October 9, 1992 after being struck by a vehicle on Route 9G in the Town of Rhinebeck. At approximately 6 am that day, Deputy Renninger responded to Route 9G in Rhinebeck for a report of a vehicle leaking gas. While crossing the road on foot to assist the motorist, Deputy Renninger was struck by a southbound vehicle traveling through the scene. Deputy Renninger was initially transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital and then from there to Albany Medical Center where he passed away approximately 12 hours later.

Deputy Renninger is the latest of five (5) Dutchess County Deputies who have died in the line of duty and they, along with their sacrifice, will never be forgotten. The ceremony is being hosted by the Police Benevolent Association and will be held on the Rail Trail Bridge itself.

Those attending should park behind Gold’s Gym on Titusville Road and walk to the Rail Trail Bridge from there (walk to the left once you’re on the Rail Trail). Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson, County Executive Marcus Molinaro and Chairman of the Dutchess County Legislature Rob Rolison will all be in attendance.
