Dover Plains woman charged with Leandra’s Law violation

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Debra A. Hankerson, age 46 of Dover Plains, for felony DWI in connection with an incident at the Wingdale Elementary School on 11/13/14.

At approximately 11:45 am on 11/13/14, Sheriff’s Deputies received a report of an unconscious female in a vehicle at the Wingdale Elementary School. Upon arrival, Ms. Hankerson was located unconscious in the vehicle and there was also a 5-year-old child in the vehicle with her.

Further interview and investigation revealed her to allegedly be in an intoxicated condition; she was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for evaluation and then taken into custody there. Child Protective Services was contacted to investigate the safety and well-being of the child, and they are continuing to investigate in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office.

Ms. Hankerson has been charged with felony-level DWI for violating Leandra’s Law, which makes DWI a felony when there is a child in the vehicle. After being processed, Ms. Hankerson was released on an appearance ticket and is to reappear before the Town of Dover Court on 11/20/14 at 6 pm.

As with any criminal case, the charges described here are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
