15 Impaired Driving Arrests Made During Saint Patrick’s Day DWI Details

During the Saint Patrick’s Day Crackdown period of March 17, 2017 thru March 19, 2017 members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, Town of Hyde Park Police Department & Village of Millerton Police Department conducted Impaired Driving details consisting of Saturation Patrols throughout the county. The arrests included 15 impaired driving arrests as well as one of the subjects being arrested on other charges as well.

These details were funded by the Governors Traffic Safety Committee and the NYS STOP-DWI Foundation which for the 4th year in  a row once again awarded the Dutchess County STOP-DWI Program a “Crackdown Enforcement Grant” for the 2016-2017 Crackdown periods.   The objective of this continued enforcement grant is to revitalize and enhance the visibility of the STOP-DWI Program through coordinated multi-agency impaired driving enforcement details targeting identified statewide crackdown periods.   They also include the assignment of certified Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) to aid in the identification and apprehension of drivers impaired by drugs other than alcohol.

Dutchess County STOP-DWI Coordinator William C. Johnson stated “The multiagency enforcement details continue to produce an eye opening number of impaired driving arrests countywide. St.  Patrick’s Day celebrations should be fun and festive, but for many it has become synonymous with drinking. When that is mixed with a bad decision to drive, the roadways throughout the holiday period have become very dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports between 2011 and 2015, 252 people were killed in impaired driving car crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day Holiday.  All of which are 100% preventable by simply having a plan or designating a sober driver before you go out. The STOP-DWI Crackdown campaign funding enhances law enforcement’s ability to identify and apprehend impaired drivers, with the ultimate goal being to reduce the incidence and impact of impaired driving.”
