Property Tax Relief Credit

Homeowners who have an income of less than $275,000, and have a STAR exemption OR STAR credit, AND paid school taxes will receive a Property Tax Relief Credit check.  See the State’s website for details:

STAR News:

New homeowners (after March 1st of 2015) must register with NYS Tax & Finance.  They will receive a STAR credit check directly from NYS Department of Tax and Finance rather than an exemption on their school tax bill for their primary residence.  To see if you must register see the State's website here:  STAR REGISTRATION.

Beginning with 2013 school tax rolls property owners with $4,500 or more State tax debts will no longer be eligible for STAR exemptions.

The NYS Department of Tax and Finance will contact property owners directly by mail. If the property owner does not resolve the debt DTF will direct the assessor to remove the STAR exemption. State savings from the removal of the STAR exemption will be used to offset the property owner's State tax debt.

Property owners must resolve the issue with DTF. The DTF determination will not be subject to review by the local Board of Assessment Review.

Seniors who are receiving an Enhanced STAR exemption who are not yet enrolled in the Income Verification Program MUST enroll in order to continue receiving the exemption.  Please see the States web Page here:
