In response to the excessive heat advisories posted for the area for the next few days, County Executive William R. Steinhaus has announced that Dutchess County will be opening three “cooling centers” to the public. Centers will be located in the City of Poughkeepsie, the City of Beacon and South Amenia and will be open from 12 noon until 8 PM. Each center will be staffed by nurses from the Dutchess County Department of Health and the Red Cross will provide food and cold drinks.
According to Steinhaus, “These centers will be open to anyone who is without air conditioning, but I especially encourage those at the highest risk, including senior citizens, those with breathing problems or other chronic illnesses, and families with young children to take shelter at the center nearest to them.”
The cooling centers are located at:
City of Poughkeepsie Salvation Army 19 Pershing Avenue (845) 471-1210
City of Beacon Dutchess County Community Action Agency 95 Catherine St. (845) 831-2620
Town of Amenia South Amenia Presbyterian Church 229 South Amenia Road (845) 373-9959
