COUNTY
EXECUTIVE ANNOUNCES 1999 YOUTH AWARDS APPLICATIONS
Poughkeepsie--Dutchess County Executive
William R. Steinhaus announces the Dutchess County Youth Bureau is seeking applications
for the County Executive's "Youth Excellence Awards" named the YEAs. These YEA
awards are for youngsters in grades 2 - 12 whose improved performance would otherwise be
overlooked. The awards are not meant for the traditional students who have effective
support systems and have always excelled.
According to Steinhaus, "The YEA awards provide the community at large the
opportunity to show local youth that we value their hard work to improve, and we celebrate
their accomplishments that are often not easily achieved."
There will also be a scholarship for a graduating high school senior who plans to continue
his/her education at Dutchess Community College. In addition, the Town of Poughkeepsie
Police Benevolent Association will be awarding a $1,500 YEA Scholarship to a graduating
high school senior who lives in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Dutchess County school districts
and youth organizations are eligible to submit nominations of county residents by March 3
1.
Kylie McGrain, the recipient of the $2,000 1998 YEA scholarship, recently said,
"Attending Dutchess Community College is a whole new experience. It's a new
beginning; I can start fresh." Besides attending college, Kylie works at Ames and
participates in a work study program at New Hope Center helping elementary students to do
their homework. Kylie plans to continue her education at SUNY New Paltz after graduating
from Dutchess Community College.
The Youth Bureau is also seeking nominations for the adult volunteer recognition award
given in honor of Dorothy 0. Lasday, a professional youth worker award and a professional
teacher award. Eligible adults should have at least five years of experience with youth
organizations.
For an awards application packet, please contact the Youth Bureau, 486-3660. Winners will
be announced at the Youth Board's Annual Luncheon which will be held in June.
