County Directs $7,000 to City of Poughkeepsie After-School Program
Poughkeepsie... Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus
has approved the county’s participation in the Harriet Tubman Academic
Skills program, an after-school tutoring program at Tubman Terrace in the
city of Poughkeepsie. The county grant for the 2003 program year is $7,000.
County Executive Steinhaus said, “It is so important to support our youth,
particularly those in our urban centers, in the development of good study
habits, skills, and knowledge so they can succeed at higher levels of
education and reduce their risks of getting into trouble as they grow up.
Having an organized after-school program for these elementary age youth can
make all the difference in the development of their young lives. I am pleased
the County can be a part of this very worthwhile program.”
The overall goal of the program is to promote youth development and prevent
juvenile delinquency. The program works with at least 45 youth in grades 1
through 5. The focus is on assisting participants in the improvement of their
school performance to grade level or higher through tutoring and homework
assistance. The services are delivered through county contract with the
Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church.
