Steinhaus Announces Community Development Recipients
Over $2 Million Distributed Countywide
Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus
has announced he has finalized contractual agreements a number of local
municipalities, all participants in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
program, for their 2003 program year funding.
County Executive Steinhaus noted, “There were many worthy applicants for the
monies Dutchess distributes. The projects that were awarded this round will
achieve much needed infrastructure improvements countywide and permit
flexibility in the human services arena by replenishing available housing for
seniors and recreational facilities for our youth.”
A summary of the activities that will now be undertaken in the county
follows:
· The Town of Hyde Park was given a $100,000 grant in 2003 for improvements
at Hackett Hill Park. The town will install new waterline service to park
buildings and undertake improvements to the existing access road. Hackett
Hill is used for a wide range of community and recreational activities
throughout the year in the Town of Hyde Park.
· The Town of Pleasant Valley was approved for $100,000 for handicapped
accessible activities at a town park that is currently being constructed on
Route 44 in the town. The construction that will be done includes a sidewalk,
ramp, dock and wooden bridge that will all meet the current ADA compliance
requirements to be accessible to handicapped individuals.
· The Town of Red Hook is working with the county and local town officials
toward the ultimate development of 80-100 units of affordable senior housing
on approximately seven acres of land. Community Development funds of $150,000
will be awarded for remediation of the land that is necessary prior to the
development of the property.
· The Town of Rhinebeck sponsored an application for $30,000 for the
non-profit Wilderstein Preservation for ongoing handicapped accessible
improvements to this well-known town historic site. Accessible restrooms,
ramps and paths will be constructed for the convenience of local residents
and tourists to the area through the town’s support and involvement in the
CDBG program.
· The Town of Stanford was awarded $150,000 to continue infrastructure
improvements near the town center. Street improvements will take place near
Creamery Road, Church Lane and Rock Place, which will include drainage,
shoulder work and resurfacing. The town has used CDBG funds in recent years
for nearby park improvements.
· The Village of Millbrook also was a sponsor for a non-profit agency, the
Church Alliance. This organization will be expanding an existing senior
housing complex by twelve additional units. The $45,000 of CDBG funds will be
used for predevelopment costs.
Steinhaus concluded, “This distribution of funds within our communities
provides an economic base to continue the county’s commitment to an enhanced
quality of life for the residents of Dutchess County.”
The CDBG funding is administered by the Dutchess County Department of
Planning and Development through the US Department of Housing and Urban
Development and provides grant funds to municipalities and human services
agencies to benefit low-to-moderate income residents of Dutchess County. An
advisory panel guides the County Executive in the grant considerations and
final award determinations are made by the County Executive.
Other awards went to:
Town of Poughkeepsie $ 29,380
Village of Fishkill $150,000
City of Beacon $241,140
