Steinhaus Announces New Beacon Shuttle
Beacon - Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus
announced today that the Dutchess County Bus System (LOOP) will inaugurate
new weekend service in Beacon on August 29, 2003. The new service, called the
Beacon Shuttle, will operate hourly on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays,
and will link the Beacon Train Station, Dia:Beacon and Main Street.
“I have been pleased to see groundbreaking progress in the City of Beacon and
along their waterfront. In helping to locate the Dia Museum here, the county
expected a flow of 60,000 visitors per year to the Hudson Valley to boost our
economy. Since its opening in May, Dia has already welcomed 50,000 visitors!
That practically meets their annual projection in just a hand- full of
months,” exclaimed Steinhaus. “With the addition of the soon to be River
and Estuaries Center to the waterfront, more jobs will be added to the
area as well,” said Steinhaus.
Beacon Mayor Clara Lou Gould said, “We are pleased that Dutchess County has
decided to establish this new weekend shuttle. The Second Saturday events
have been growing since the beginning of the year, and the Shuttle will
provide a good link between Dia:Beacon and the shops and restaurants
in our business district.”
“Dutchess County has been working closely with Beacon officials and community
leadership as that provided by the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of
Commerce and Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA) to develop additional
bus service to meet the needs of city residents and visitors,” Steinhaus
said. “Last summer we provided service for five Saturdays in August and
September, and this year we have cooperated with the Beacon Second Saturday
events with a shuttle using the Dutchess County Trolley.”
The Beacon Shuttle will operate from 12:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. Service hours will be extended until 8:30 pm on the second
Saturday of each month in support of the on-going arts events. Passengers may
purchase an All Day Pass for $2.00 ($1.00 for seniors, children, and those
with disabilities).
