County Executive Steinhaus Announces Flu Immunization Clinics In Dutchess

Dutchess County Executive, William R. Steinhaus announced today the schedule for the County’s 2003 Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Clinics. Conducted each fall by the Dutchess County Department of Health, this year’s clinics will be held from October 7 through November 25, 2003.

County Executive Steinhaus said, “The County has always had a strong commitment to the health of our community, particularly our seniors and youth, two of our county’s greatest assets. One way to reinforce that County commitment is through our extensive flu shot calendar set up to blanket the county to meet everyone’s needs. Offering the right immunizations at the right time is key to successful health outcomes.”

The County Executive noted that during last year’s round of Flu Immunization Clinics, almost 6300 county residents received their flu shot; mostly senior citizens.

The County Executive said representatives from a variety of County departments will be available at the flu clinics to distribute information on programs and services important to seniors. Such programs include HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps underwrite the cost of heating fuel oil for seniors), the Home Weatherization Program, Nutrition Education and Home Delivered Meals, Exercise Programs, Legal Services, Elder Abuse Assistance and Consumer Affairs.

Clinics taking place in October will offer flu vaccine to anyone 50 years of age and older, anyone 18 years of age and older with a health problem, and to health care workers or living in household where in contact with those at highest risk of complications from the flu.

All County clinics will offer pneumonia vaccine to:

• Adults 18-64 years of age with certain chronic medical conditions; and,

• Adults 65 years of age and older.

The fee for flu vaccine is $15. The fee for pneumonia vaccine is $20. Medicare Part B covers both vaccines. Medicare Cards must be brought to the clinic. Adults enrolled in Medicare HMO’s may be required to pay the fee.
