STEINHAUS
SEEKS TO PRESERVE PAY AND BENEFITS FOR COUNTY GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES CALLED TO
SERVE IN
”OPERATION INFINITE JUSTICE”
Dutchess County Executive
William R. Steinhaus has proposed legislation that would preserve pay and health
benefits for Dutchess County employees who are members of the Armed Forces
Active and Inactive Reserve who may be called to duty as part of “Operation
Infinite Justice.”
In submitting two Resolutions
to the County Legislature, Steinhaus stated, “These employees have volunteered
to serve our country in time of military need and to accept enormous disruptions
in their lives. We owe it to them to minimize these disruptions to them and
their families and acknowledge their selfless service to our country.”
The first Resolution submitted
by Steinhaus would provide for compensation protection and other benefits to
full time employees called to active duty. Compensation would be for the
difference between employees’ current county salary and their total military
pay. It also calls for employees to continue to accrue vacation and sick leave
credits and for the county to continue payments to the New York State Retirement
System.
The second Resolution proposed
by Steinhaus enables employees and their families who are members of the Armed
forces Active and Inactive Reserve called to active duty to continue receiving
all current health benefits they would otherwise be entitled to receive.
“Dutchess County has long supported volunteerism among its workforce,” noted Steinhaus, “and we wish to support those employees who have volunteered to serve and protect this country. These proposals are one small way for us to do that.”
County employment records
indicate there are presently nine county employees in the Reserves.
