Poughkeepsie... Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus announced the award of approximately $112,000 to Cornell Cooperative Extension to provide nutrition education to individuals, families and the community within Dutchess County. 

“As part of the county government’s commitment to address general health awareness for our residents, which includes a growing obesity prevalence and its numerous adverse health effects, we are pleased to direct this funding to Cornell,” said Steinhaus.

Through networking and collaborations, Cornell’s nutrition program plans to improve food and nutrition knowledge for at least 450 low income families in Dutchess County so they will have the ability to make healthy nutritional choices within their budget. 

“The nutrition, health and food safety programs provide individuals, families and the community with the tools they need to make informed decisions that can lead to improved health practices.  We are fortunate to be able to partner with Dutchess County and County Executive Steinhaus on this initiative,” said Linda Keech, Executive Director of Cornell.

Dutchess County Department of Health, who also offers nutrition education, will work with Cornell on this endeavor.  Commissioner of Health, Michael C. Caldwell, MD, MPH states, “We are continually looking for ways to enhance our ability to get our public health messages out to the community.  Raising awareness for healthy nutritional options can lead to the reduction and risks of heart disease, diabetes and other related health problems.”

County Executive Steinhaus added, “The health and well-being of our community is of the utmost importance.  This $112,000 effort will help Dutchess County residents make informed decisions promoting a healthier and longer life.”
